Health and the Bioeconomy

MIT Positions

MIT supports strong funding for biomedical research, especially research that brings together a variety of scientific and engineering disciplines to address medical issues and to apply biological knowledge to other issues, such as improving manufacturing.

  • Bioeconomy

MIT submitted these comments in response to a January 2023 White House Request for Information on the bioeconomy.

  • ARPA-H Report

MIT faculty prepared a White Paper with recommendations on the optimal focus and approach for ARPA-H.

    ARPA-H Funding Letter

MIT wrote this letter to Congress in support of ARPA-H funding for FY24.

  • Convergence

A group of MIT faculty laid out the case in 2016 for a “convergence” between biology and other scientific fields in this paper.

Faculty Ideas

Numerous MIT faculty and entities are engaged in research related to biomedicine and biomanufacturing. Here are just a few examples.

  • Biomanufacturing

Two leading MIT researchers were involved with the report on the bioeconomy by President Biden’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST).

  • AI and Breast Cancer

Professor Regina Barzilay’s research on improving breast cancer detection with artificial intelligence was featured in an article in The Washington Post.

  • Cancer Research

The Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT works to create knowledge, tools and treatments to fight cancer.

  • Brain Research

The McGovern Institute studies the brain and applies that knowledge to addressing brain disorders.

  • Medical Science and Engineering

The Institute for Medical Engineering and Science brings together engineering and science research and education to improve human health.
