The House Science Committee advanced a bipartisan nuclear research bill that directs the Department of Energy to partner with the private sector and academia to build new nuclear reactor prototypes and includes plans to reach accelerated fusion designs. In his State of the Union address, President Obama tasked Vice President Joe Biden with leading a new national “moonshot” initiative against cancer. Biden has been speaking with researchers across the country and led a panel at the World Economic Forum to discuss his plan with cancer researchers, including MIT’s own, Paula Hammond. President Obama pledged nearly $4 billion to invest in the development of self-driving cars through “real-world pilot projects.” Details of the investment are expected in the President’s budget due on February 9th. (Source: The Hill)
